Version 4.1 of the Simotion control system provides additional Profinet functions for modular machine concepts. The Simotion 4.1 system can be used to synchronize electrical and hydraulic drives with each other. By means of controller-to-controller communication via Profinet, Simotion V4.1 enables axis synchronization distributed over several controllers. It also supports automatic topology recognition in the Profinet network. Enhanced performance of the PCbased Simotion P control unit and the new Simatic ET 200S high-speed peripheral devices, means cycle times of 250µs with isochronous real time (IRT) are now reached. This is the basis for highly dynamic closedloop control circuits, such as those needed for hydraulic applications with position and pressure control. With the new version, Simotion controllers can be configured as control units and devices at the same Profinet interface. This means that hierarchical utomation structures and modular machine concepts can be implemented easily and without any additional components.

Magnetostrictive position sensors provide a standard 0.01% F.S. linearity error between measured and real physical position. For applications requiring an optimum of measurement accuracy, the optional internal linearisation for the Temposonics R-Series has recently been developed. The linearization circuitry is directly integrated into the electronics in the sensor head and compensates even smallest linearity errors. For calibration, the signal output is tested by each individual sensor on a laser interferometer in steps of 0.001mm, thus determining its individual linearity curve. The deviations from the ideal curve are stored for the positions in a corrective table integrated in the sensor electronics. For measurement lengths up to 500mm, the internal linearization improves the measurement accuracy by factor 3, i.e. the linearity error is maximally 0.015mm. With sensors of lengths between 500 and 5,000mm, the measurement accuracy is increased by factor 5 compared to the standard version.

The BIM-UNT can detect all standard magnets in pneumatic cylinders safely and without multiple switching points making stocking of different sensor types redundant. A fixation lip supports one-hand mounting in the T groove. The sensor can be adjusted in the groove and fixed by a stable wing screw made of tool steel. For vibration-resistant mounting it is simply enough to tighten the screw. The fixation of the screw near the cable routing prevents an uplift of the sensor when pulling the cable. A useful support for adjustment and operation is the local LED, which displays the switching status of the sensor. With a total length of only 28mm the BIM-UNT is compact. The active faces are located directly at the sensor end and thus enable a safe detection of the piston rod up to the end postion at the compact short stroke cylinder.

The new compact 1FT7 servo motor is for high-performance applications in production machinery and demanding mechanical handling equipment. The servo motor series is characterised by its high dynamic response and compact design. Even the self-cooled version has an overload withstand capability of four times the standstill torque M0 throughout the speed range which goes up to a useful 6,000rpm. Compared to its predecessor the 1FT6, the length of the 1FT7 has been reduced by one third, but the two series are wholly interchangeable. The permanent magnet synchronous motors are optimised for use in the Siemens fully digital drive and control systems. This first generation of 1FT7s are self-cooled motors with shaft heights ranging from 48 to 100mm, they have a rated speed of 1,500 to 6,000rpm, rated power of 0.85kW to 10.5kW and static torque 3 to 70Nm.

The PCI-8154 is a 4-axis pulse train modularised motion control card for controlling s teppers, servos, and linear motors. It delivers high-frequency pulse rates of up to 6.55MHz and features a hardware-controlled emergency stop to terminate movement in case of system malfunction, a software security protection to prevent illegal copying of custom software, and a card index switch to support multiple PCI-8154 cards in a single system. The device allows for movement through multiple axes with linear and circular interpolations using continuous contouring thus providing motion control for a wide-range of manufacturing applications. The unit also offers 13 homing modes to support a variety of applications, backlash compensation for improved movement accuracy, and performs simultaneous starting and stopping of multiple axes in a single card or multiple card configurations. The modularised design supports extension boards that can be attached for distributed I/O control, high-speed triggering, and ECAM control.
